Product Safety Specialist (m/f/d), Chemical Compliance

Location: Cologne / Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia | Hybrid | Full-time, 37.5 hrs/week | Permanent

Introduction

Chemical safety is only as strong as the documentation behind it, and our client is looking for someone who takes real pride in getting it right. This is an established, internationally active organisation in the chemical and ingredients space. It is hiring a Safety Affairs Specialist to strengthen its Quality Assurance function. You will turn European chemicals legislation into accurate, reliable safety documentation that colleagues, customers and authorities can depend on.

Why This Role?

The client sits within a long-standing global group but operates as a mid-sized European site. You work in a close-knit team with short decision paths, so your input is heard and your impact is visible. You also have the backing and stability of an international network. That combination gives you real ownership of your work without losing the security of a established player.

Because the business serves a broad customer base across many industries, the work stays varied. You will classify new and existing products, respond to regulatory questions and follow formulation changes through to updated documentation. Over time this builds a deep, transferable skill set in hazard classification, SDS authoring and notifications, which stays in demand across the chemical sector.

The client invests in continuous development through structured training and individual growth discussions, and you will collaborate with international colleagues. For someone early in a regulatory career, or ready to move up from a vocational background, this is a credible route to broader compliance responsibility. The hybrid set-up and flexible hours also leave room for a good life outside work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of European chemicals regulations in day-to-day operations
  • Classify chemicals and mixtures, and maintain substance and product data
  • Create, review, update and manage Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Re-calculate existing products regularly to confirm their classification stays current
  • Process formulation changes, assess the effect on product properties and update SDS accordingly
  • Support SDS dispatch via SAP, resolve system error messages and respond to reporting requests
  • Contribute to Poison Centre Notifications (PCN)
  • Handle regulatory enquiries from customers, authorities and internal departments
  • Prepare and request health certificates, and archive and manage regulatory documentation

Key Requirements

  • Completed vocational training in a chemical field (for example chemical laboratory technician or chemical production specialist), or a comparable qualification
  • At least 1 to 2 years of relevant experience in Safety Affairs, Regulatory Affairs or chemical safety
  • Experience creating or managing SDS (desirable)
  • Knowledge of hazardous substances and dangerous goods law at national, European and international level (an advantage)
  • Confident use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and SAP
  • Careful, structured and independent working style with strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills, team orientation and a service mindset
  • Very good German (mandatory requirement) and English, spoken and written
  • Direct contract employment only (freelancers cannot be considered)

Additional Information

  • Salary: approximately €47,700 to €51,000 gross per year (based on 12 salaries), depending on experience
  • Working model: hybrid, with flexible working hours and a 37.5-hour week
  • Time off: 30 days of annual leave
  • Benefits: company pension scheme, asset-building benefits and a job bike programme
  • Development: continuous professional and personal development, with exposure to interdisciplinary and international teams
  • Culture: a quality-driven, collaborative environment that values reliability and fresh ideas equally
  • Equal opportunities: applications are welcome regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, nationality, gender, religion, sexual orientation or social background
